Getting Started

ReadRecall requires two things: Anki for flashcard review, and an AI API key for card generation. Follow the steps below to get set up.

Install Anki + AnkiConnect

Anki is a free flashcard app that uses spaced repetition. AnkiConnect lets ReadRecall sync cards directly to Anki.

Download Anki

Download and install Anki for your operating system. It's free and open source.

Install AnkiConnect Add-on

Open Anki and install the AnkiConnect add-on:

  1. In Anki, go to ToolsAdd-ons
  2. Click Get Add-ons...
  3. Enter this code: 2055492159
  4. Click OK to install

Step 3

Restart Anki

Close and reopen Anki to activate the add-on. Keep Anki running in the background when using ReadRecall.

Get an AI API Key

ReadRecall uses AI to generate flashcards. You can choose either Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (GPT-4).

Option A: Anthropic (Claude)

Recommended

Claude excels at understanding context and generating high-quality educational content.

  1. Create an account at console.anthropic.com
  2. Go to SettingsAPI Keys
  3. Click Create Key and copy it
  4. Paste the key in ReadRecall's settings

Option B: OpenAI (GPT-4)

GPT-4 is a powerful alternative for generating flashcards from your reading.

  1. Create an account at platform.openai.com
  2. Go to API Keys in the dashboard
  3. Click Create new secret key and copy it
  4. Paste the key in ReadRecall's settings

Note: Both providers charge based on usage. Typical flashcard generation costs a few cents per book chapter. You can set spending limits in your provider's dashboard.
